Here at Pretty Woman, the fit is all important, if you can’t get in-store for a proper fitting then here are a few tips to achieve the perfect fit.
1) The Band
Firstly most ladies are wearing the band of their bra too loose. The band actually provides 80% of the support of a bra. As a general rule of thumb, you should be able to put two fingers under the band and pull out to a maximum of 1 inch.
If the band is not lying horizontally around the body or the back band is riding up then chances are your band is too loose.
Generally, the measurement around your rib cage directly underneath your breasts is the size your band should be. A new bra should be fastened on the loosest hook of the band, if you are having to fasten it on a tighter hook then the band is too loose. One of the reasons for this is to extend the life of your bra. With washing and wearing, the elasticity of the band declines and this is when you can tighten the band by fastening on a tighter hook.
2) The Straps
These should have a two finger tension. They only provide 20% off the support of a bra and if they are causing red marks or welts in your shoulders then they are taking unnecessary weight. This, in turn, can cause neck and backache.
3) The Cups
The cups should contain the breasts with no spillage of breast tissue either underneath, over the top or sides of the bra.
4) The Underwire
The Underwire should be sitting on the rib cage and not on breast tissue. Your breasts often start further round the body than you think and it is a common problem to be wearing bras where the wire is sitting on breast tissue rather than ribs.
5) The Centre Gore
The centre gore or centre wire of the bra should sit flat against the rib cage in the middle of the breasts without digging in.
If a bra’s centre gore is raised or twisting off then this particular style of bra may not be for you.
